"Let the little children come to Me, ..."
The world often marginalizes children. Worldly value is often based on what one can
do for, or bring to, society; therefore, children are viewed as merely
"dependents". But, as with
many marginalized individuals, Jesus considers them highly valuable. To emphasize His point Jesus goes on to say
that not only should we "let the little children come..", He admonishes us to emulate and learn from these
little ones. A heart of dependent,
childlike faith is essential to eternal life and is welcomed by God and Christ. The world advances independence, protects selfishness,
and encourages skepticism. Jesus promotes
just the opposite: dependence, childlike faith, and unfettered trust. "For the message of the cross is
foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the
power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18).
We are as dependent on Christ for
our salvation as a nursing babe is dependent on his mother for nourishment. And he said,
"I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like the little
children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven..." (Mathew 18:3).
